The Rotorua Trilogy package is a self drive tour that combines three of New Zealand’s iconic cultural and natural heritage attractions : Rotorua Museum, Waimangu Volcanic Valley and Whakarewarewa - the Living Thermal Village.
Individually each attraction is distinctive, yet collectively they bring to life the story of the devastating 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera, New Zealand’s most significant natural event which changed Rotorua’s history, landscape and lives forever.
The Rotorua Museum
In an endeavour to entice visitors back to Rotorua following the eruption, the New Zealand Government’s first investment in the tourism industry was the Bath House. Originally built for spa and medical treatments, the Bath House quickly became known as the ‘Great South Seas Spa’. These days it houses the Rotorua Museum, presenting the fascinating history of the Rotorua region in innovative and exciting ways.
Waimangu Volcanic Valley
The Mount Tarawera eruption totally destroyed the area around Lake Rotomahana, but also created seven craters to the south of Rotomahana which became known as Waimangu Volcanic Valley. Over the next 30 years hot springs formed within the craters, and forest and bird life returned to the area. Today, Waimangu is the youngest geothermal ecosystem in the world and is a place of outstanding natural beauty - unspoilt and protected by law.
Whakarewarewa- the Living Village
The eruption of Mount Tarawera completely altered what was a sumptuous lifestyle and thriving community for Tuhourangi, the local Maori tribe. With their land now uninhabitable the survivors eventually relocated to Whakarewarewa, where they rebuilt their lives and independence. Meet descendants of those survivors at New Zealand’s only tribally owned and managed, living, Maori and geothermal village.
