A Family-Friendly Day Out in Rotorua for Young Explorers

Rotorua is a natural playground where curious minds thrive. With its unique blend of geothermal wonders, lush forests, crystal-clear lakes and adventure activities, it’s the perfect destination for families seeking memorable experiences. Whether you’re visiting with toddlers or teens, here’s how to create an unforgettable day (or two!) exploring Rotorua with your budding adventurers.

Waimangu Volcanic Valley Rotorua for young explorers

Morning: Geothermal Delights at Waimangu Volcanic Valley

Start your family adventure at Waimangu Volcanic Valley, where natural wonders will captivate explorers of all ages. Across a self-guided walk and guided boat cruise, Waimangu offers a magical landscape where steam drifts across blue crater lakes, mud pools bubble like witch’s cauldrons, and geysers play along the lakeshore.

The walking trails are perfect for families, with clearly marked paths that can be tackled in sections. The shuttle bus that runs up and down the valley means you can tailor your adventure to suit little legs – complete the full walk or just hit the highlights. Kids will be mesmerised by the Inferno Crater with its hypnotic blue waters that mysteriously rise and fall, and the massive Frying Pan Lake – the world’s largest hot spring.

Cap off your Waimangu experience with the 45-minute cruise across Lake Rotomahana. Children love spotting the lakeside geysers and steaming cliffs, while parents appreciate the fascinating stories shared by the skipper about the infamous 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption.

Tip for parents: Bring water bottles, sunscreen, and hats. The walking trails have well-placed benches for rest spots.

Midday: Redwoods Adventure for All Ages

After a morning of geothermal exploration, head to the Whakarewarewa Forest – known locally as The Redwoods – where towering 120-year-old California Redwoods create a magical setting for family fun.

Older kids and teens will love the network of mountain biking trails suitable for all skill levels – bike rentals are available on-site, including child-sized bikes and helmets.

Afternoon: Choose Your Own Adventure

Rotorua offers plenty of many family-friendly activities to suit your children’s ages and interests:

For Thrill-Seekers: Zorb offers an experience unique to Rotorua – rolling down a hill inside a giant inflatable ball. With four different runs, it’s a hit with kids 5 years old and up – there’ll be squeals of laughter and delight!

It has a beautiful natural setting walking down thru forests with a bus return uphill. • We were fortunate to visit when there were no crowds and walked the valley in almost complete isolation which added to the mysterious and prehistoric feel. Everywhere we turned was a feast for the eyes. Our teenage son only wished we could have spent more time there. If you appreciate nature, enjoy an easy hike, want to see something unique Waimangu is for…

  • A peaceful quiet walk in the rain. We came here on a rainy day, as there wasn’t much else to do outside when in rains in Rotorua. Staff was nice and walked us through the bus stops and how everything worked there. We paid the additional $5 to rent a heat thermometer gun (not sure was the actual name of it is). It was cool to see how hot the water was getting with the temperature gauge. This was a good place to go when it rains. The walkway is…
