Rotorua’s All-Weather Outdoor Activities
Whether you’re visiting Rotorua for a short break or a week-long holiday, don’t let a wet weather forecast change your plans. We’ve rounded up the best rainy-day outdoor activities where you can pop on a jacket, bring an umbrella, and still soak up the scenery no matter what the weather is doing. In fact, many of our geothermal experiences are even more atmospheric and awe-inspiring when the clouds roll in! Showers, wind, mist or fog – here’s a few of our favourites.
Waimangu Volcanic Valley
We might be biased, but we reckon Waimangu is the ultimate all-weather outdoor activity in Rotorua. When mist rolls through the valley, steam mingles with the clouds, and the rain starts to fall – the geothermal landscape feels like a whole other planet.
Gaze at the steam rising off the sizzling Frying Pan Lake (even more spectacular when cold air meets the warm surface), see the vibrant and vivid colours of silica terraces come to life, and climb aboard our covered boats to cruise across Lake Rotomahana – the steaming cliffs and lakeside geysers are unforgettable in any weather.
Our 4-kilometre walking track is well-maintained, and the largely downhill route means you’re not slogging back uphill in the rain, instead you can easily jump on our shuttle buses that run regularly throughout the day to return to the visitor centre (or to skip a section of the valley walk). Layer up and bring a waterproof jacket and good walking shoes, but don’t let drizzle put you off – it’s well worth the short drive from Rotorua’s CBD.
Te Puia
Te Puia offers the perfect blend of geothermal wonders, cultural tours, and culinary experiences – and is very much worth visiting even if the weather’s being a bit unpredictable. On their Te Rā guided experience, watch the famous Pōhutu Geyser erupt (it’s even more dramatic when the steam meets cool and misty air), and catch a powerful haka performance in their marae (meeting house). See our treasured native bird up close at the Kiwi Conservation Centre, then step inside to see local weavers and carvers at work at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute.
Their evening Te Pō cultural experience takes things up a notch. Enjoy a traditional hāngī feast cooked underground using geothermal heat, watch a mesmerising performance of Māori song and dance in their sheltered venue, and then pop on a raincoat or umbrella for the stunning Mārama: Geyser Light Trail. The valley transforms after dark with a dazzling display of lights that give a magical glow to the geysers, pathways, and native bush. Rain only adds to the atmospheric effect as mist swirls through the illuminated steam, and the lights reflect and radiate in a kaleidoscope of colour. Bring your camera!
Rotorua Lakefront Walk and Hot Pool Swim
Rotorua’s upgraded lakefront boardwalk offers an easy, accessible route for all ages and abilities to enjoy. The sight of rain pitter-pattering on the lake’s surface is mesmerising to watch, just keep an umbrella handy to stay dry.
The flat, well-maintained path winds from the Rotorua i-SITE around Sulphur Point to the Government Gardens and Polynesian Spa, with plenty of cafés and shops where you can take duck into for shelter if it suddenly pours down.
Finish your walk with a hot pool soak at Polynesian Spa or Wai Ariki – the soothing geothermal waters are the perfect way to relax, unwind and enjoy some serenity on a moody day.
ZORB Rotorua
Ever rolled downhill with your mates in a giant inflatable ball? It’s ridiculously fun, regardless of the weather! A Kiwi invention that started right here in Rotorua, you’re getting wet inside the balls anyway (that’s part of the experience), so drizzle or sunshine makes no difference to the fun factor.
Choose between riding solo or with friends, going straight down or zigzagging on the sidewinder track. Either way, you’ll be laughing too hard to care about the weather – an ideal mood-booster on a grey-sky day. Bring a towel and change of clothes – you can warm up afterwards in their hot tubs and sauna on-site.
Off Road NZ
Get wet and wild at Off Road, where a drizzly day makes for the ultimate 4WD adventure! Choose from the self-drive 4WD Bush Safari where you tackle the scenic course and variety of obstacles yourself, or let their expert drivers take you through your paces on a Monster 4×4 Thrill Ride. Either way, you’ll navigate through native forest, over serious terrain, and have tons of fun along the way. The rain and mud are part of the experience, not a reason to postpone.
Agrojet at Velocity Valley
Feel the rush, rain or shine! Agrojet takes you speeding across water at up to 100km/hr, spinning 360-degree turns and pulling some serious G-force – as expert drivers navigate you through sharp bends and sweeping curves on a unique jetsprint course. It’s fast, it’s thrilling, and the adrenaline high lasts for ages. Perfect for those wanting a blast of excitement that doesn’t require blue skies.
When it comes to Rotorua’s geothermal wonders, ancient forests, picturesque lakes, and epic thrills – we find the rain enhances, not diminishes from the experience! So pack a good raincoat, embrace whatever weather comes your way, and discover why Rotorua’s outdoor attractions are stunning 365 days a year.
