Enjoy the classic a Steven Spielberg epic, Jurassic Park, on a giant outdoor movie screen, surrounded by the stunning geothermal wonders, native wildlife and atmospheric environment of Waimangu Volcanic Valley.

 

8pm, Saturday, 27 February 2021

Waimangu Local Store & Cafe open from 5pm, entry to Waimangu Volcanic Valley from 7pm. 

Your evening starts at the Waimangu Local Store and Cafe, where there'll be live music and great dinner specials. Grab some drinks and snacks, then start a  twilight geothermal walk through the volcanic valley to a spectacular location overlooking Frying Pan Lake and Cathedral Rocks.

Settle in to watch Jurassic Park on a huge outdoor movie screen surrounded by the geothermal wonders of Waimangu Volcanic Valley.  Then embark on a walk after dark to see the mystical Inferno Crater by night. Continue on to meet the bus ready to return you back to the top of the hill at the Waimangu Visitor Centre.

5pm Waimangu Local Store & Cafe open for food & drink with live music from Matt Barnard. 

7:00pm Start your walk through Waimangu Volcanic Valley to the Cathedral Rocks

8pm Jurassic Park Outdoor Movie screening ay Cathedral Rocks Lookout

10:15 pm Night walk to Inferno Crater Lake

10.45pm Internal bus transport back to Waimangu Visitor Centre

  • Children $10 (Jurassic Park is rated PG13)

Jurassic park is rated PG13. Children under 15 years must be accompanied by an adult.

What to bring

  • A torch
  • Something to sit on, a beanbag, camp chair or blanket. Movie area  is on gravel, you'll need to carry your seat through the valley for approximately 30 minutes. 
  • Insect repellant

What to wear and bring

  • Bring your own seating - The viewing areas are compacted pumice gravel (not grass), so bear in mind blankets etc may get dusty. We recommend camp chairs or picnic blankets.
  • Please wear warm clothes and comfortable walking shoes. Movie locations are just over 1km walk downhill from the visitor centre.
  • Bring a torch or headlamp. It will be dark after the movie when you are walking to the bus stop.
  • Bring insect repellent.

Safety

Please remember that you are responsible for the safety of your group. Please ensure you bring enough torches. Keep to the walking trails and follow all safety instructions and signage.

Event Schedule

 

5pm - Waimangu Local Store & Café Open

We will be serving a menu with burgers, pizzas and snacks, with some special event promotions on offer.
Snack packs (including popcorn and treats) will be available to purchase.
We have a licensed bar at the Waimangu Local Store and Café.

No alcohol can be taken into the valley.

Toilets

There are flushing toilets at the Waimangu Visitor Centre before you head down into the valley and there will be portaloos at the movie viewing areas. The Visitor Centre toilets will be open when buses return at the end of the evening. 

7pm Waimangu Volcanic Valley Open

There is a choice of 2 movie locations, both are just over 1km walk, downhill on a gravel trail.  You will need to carry any seating with you. Seating is on a first come first served basis.

8pm Movie Starts

There will be garden bar serving hot chocolate and snacks at the movie viewing locations. 

10.15pm - Movie Finishes

Night walk to Inferno Crater. There will be some lighting along the way, but please use your own torches. Please keep to the trail at all times. There is limited viewing space at Inferno Crater so we will control numbers up the steps.

There will be lots of people heading out through the valley up to Inferno Crater and back on buses to the visitor centre. We have capacity for 66 people every 20 minutes to return to the Waimangu Car Park. Please be patient with us as we work to get everyone out as efficiently as possible.

If you’re in a hurry to leave after the movie, we suggest you watch the movie from Screen 2 further down into the valley. This will make it easier for you to walk out to the bus stop.
